Lock snapping is on the increase across Barnsley
Lock snapping is on the increase significantly in the Barnsley area now!
Originating in the West Yorkshire region it has crossed the border into South Yorkshire in the last few years.
What is it?
The locks on upvc doors and some composite, aluminium, patio and wooden doors are called “euro cylinders”. These are made of the soft but non corrosive metal brass. Relatively cheap to produce and can be made in various sizes to suit all door types. But there is a weak point within the cylinder itself which has been exposed recently especially over the interent and “You Tube” .
With a little knowledge and force the cylinder can be “snapped” in half and extracted from the door. This usually involves breaking the handles first and afterwards the lock can be manipulated open.
What can be done?
The great news is that your original locks can be replaced with very high security antisnap locks. The appearance of your door will not change and neither do the handles need altering. The other great news is the new locks that SF Locksmiths will fit for you come with added protection of pick, drill and bump protection. All a bit technical for some but you can be assured these locks will protect your home for the long term future.
Is there anything else that can be done?
I mentioned above that to get to the lock itself the thieves usually have to break the handle first. Well your handles can also be upgraded to a “pas 24 handle” . These handles can not be broken and put a visual deterrent out to the thieves as well. What we are trying to say, is they will take one look at these handles and think about going somewhere else! They don’t suit all doors but certainly the vast majority on doors within the Barnsley area. If you add an antisnap lock to a pas 24 handle you will have the ultimate protection to your property.
