Today, I attended an emergency locksmith job in South Hiendley, S72, where a customer had become locked inside their home.
The barn conversion had only one access door, which made the situation particularly concerning when it refused to open.
Failed Lockmaster gearbox and broken door handle
On inspection, I found that the Lockmaster hook-case gearbox, part of the door’s multipoint locking mechanism, had failed.
The door had become misaligned, so the customer had to apply excessive force to lift the handle when locking it. This placed considerable strain on the mechanism, eventually causing the gearbox to fail and the handle to break.
New Lockmaster gearbox and gold Brisant Sweet handles
I gained access and replaced the failed Lockmaster hook-case gearbox.
I also fitted new gold Brisant Sweet door handles to replace the damaged originals. Their rounded design makes them harder to grip and attack, adding further security alongside the existing locking system.

The customer was delighted to have their only entrance working again, with a replacement locking gearbox and attractive new gold handles.
“When a door handle becomes difficult to lift, don’t force it. Door misalignment can eventually lead to a failed gearbox and a completely jammed door.” – Stephen Fretwell.
